About Grand Seiko SLGH027
Grand Seiko Mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours Limited Edition Evolution 9 Collection
A mechanical limited edition in the Evolution 9 Style captures the majesty of the Mount Iwate mountainscape
The beauty of the natural world is palpable at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where all Grand Seiko mechanical watches are made. Located in northern Japan, with Mt. Iwate in the distance, master craftsmen and women bring watches to life in a place deeply in tune with the local surroundings. The watch features a new textured dial inspired by the ridges of Mt. Iwate. The first Mt. Iwate pattern dial appeared in 2006 and has since become deeply associated with Grand Seiko mechanical watchmaking. Mt. Iwate is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan; its history can be felt in the rugged mountainscape and the lava flow at its northern base. The dial of this creation captures the timeless beauty of Mt. Iwate as seen from the sky, with the striking light-blue hue evoking the purity of the air and water that surround this landmark.
The case and bracelet are made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, a stainless-steel alloy that features greater corrosion resistance than is typically seen in the watch industry today. It is powered by the Caliber 9SA5, which offers a power reserve of 80 hours thanks to the use of the highly efficient Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels.
Limited Edition of 1,200 pieces.
Grand Seiko SLGH027 Features
Designed in the Evolution 9 Styles
The watch has been shaped in the Evolution 9 Style, which represents a step forward for the Grand Seiko ideals of beauty, legibility, and wearing comfort while honoring a design language established in 1967 with the iconic 44GS. Zaratsu polishing to a distortion-free mirror finish alternates with a delicate hairline finish to impart a quiet and harmonious glow. The watch’s powerful hands and prominent, grooved indexes ensure the legibility for which Grand Seiko has become renowned. The case, with its low center of gravity, and a bracelet with the perfect width and thickness combine to ensure that the watch sits comfortably and securely on the wrist.
Ever-Brilliant Steel case and bracelet
The case and bracelet are made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, a stainless-steel alloy that features greater corrosion resistance than is typically seen in the watch industry today. Enhanced by the properties of Ever Brilliant Steel, the hairline-finished parts of the watch shine whiter than they would if formed from usual stainless steel. Their finish perfectly complements the light-blue dial, creating a harmonious design that shimmers beautifully on the wrist.
The movement’s finish inspired by the nature of Shizukuishi
The movement’s finish is inspired by the rippling waves of the Shizukuishi River near the studio where the watch is made.
Caliber 9SA5
Through the use of the highly efficient Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels, Caliber 9SA5 achieves approximately 80 hours of operation when the watch is fully wound even with its a high-beat rate of 36,000 vph. The movement also allows the watches it powers to be more lightweight through a unique horizontal ring construction.

Grand Seiko SLGH027 History
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
