About Grand Seiko SBGN027
Grand Seiko “Slate” Quartz GMT Sport Collection
High precision, the convenience of GMT and a sports design
A great combination GMT Watch for the active traveler
The SBGN027 quartz GMT combines reliable performance with Grand Seiko’s distinct design philosophy to create an ideal travel companion.
The 39mm stainless steel case is paired with a matching bracelet, and an extra GMT hand and steel 24-hour bezel allow for the easy tracking of an additional time zone. SBGN027 is rated to 100 meters, and features a screw down crown at the four o’clock position to ensure comfort and a dual-curve sapphire crystal for optimal clarity and durability. The exceptional finishing draws the eye, with Zaratsu-polished surfaces contrasting against hairline-finished areas throughout.
SBGN027 features a dynamic black sunray dial with monochromatic highlights. The hands and dial indexes have generous Lumibrite paint for excellent nighttime visibility.
Caliber 9F86 provides exceptional accuracy, with a rating of +/-10 seconds a year. The movement allows the wearer to adjust the hour hand without interrupting the high-accuracy timekeeping, a key feature of any reliable travel watch. Grand Seiko’s quartz movements are built to the same exacting standards as Grand Seiko’s mechanical and Spring Drive calibers, and they are crafted to be serviced by a trained watchmaker.
About 9F Quartz
Caliber 9F was developed to allow the creation of the ultimate quartz watch and is now widely recognized as one of the finest quartz calibers in the world. The suitability of this remarkable Grand Seiko quartz movement to the international traveler is enhanced by the addition of a GMT hand. The high precision (+/- 10 seconds a year) of Caliber 9F86 is not compromised when the time zone is changed as the watch continues to keep perfect time even when the crown is pulled out and the hour hand is moved to adjust the local time. The GMT hand is clearly differentiated in design from the hour and minute hands and the 24-hour dial ring is divided into two 12-hour sections to allow AM and PM to be easily distinguished.
The hairline finish to the case, the 24-hour bezel, the radial pattern of the black dial and the simple three-row bracelet give the watch a powerful appearance, while the screw-lock crown keeps the watch airtight and 20 bar water resistant, making it durable enough to withstand all life’s challenges.

Grand Seiko SBGN027 History
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
