About Grand Seiko SLGA015

The Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive 5 Days Diver’s 200m

Evolution 9 Collection uniquely high specification diver’s watch

This Grand Seiko Diver’s watch is powered by Spring Drive Caliber 9RA5 which offers an accuracy rate of ±10 seconds per month and a five day power reserve. It is made from High-intensity Titanium, a material that is 30% lighter than stainless steel and even more impervious to scratches and corrosion. To further enhance its durability, the rotating bezel is in ceramic to protect the watch from being scratched.

The dial is deep black in color and has a strongly patterned surface, inspired by a particular aspect of the oceans that surround the Japanese archipelago and that are criss-crossed by water currents of great power. One such is the Kuroshio Current, also known as the Black Stream. It flows northwards past Japan towards the Arctic North Pacific and is one of the largest ocean streams in the world. The dynamic and sometimes violent tides caused by the Black Stream inspire the deep black color and richly textured surface of the dial of this new 200m diver’s watch.

About 9RA2 Spring Drive 5 Days

At the birthplace of Spring Drive, the Shinshu Watch Studio, dedicated craftsmen and women meticulously assemble timepieces by hand part by part, from the case, dial, hands and indexes to all other components. At every step of the movement creation process, from development and design to manufacture, assembly, and adjustment, talented and expert craftsmen and women strive for the highest possible standards and maintain their complete dedication to the constant enhancement of their skills. Caliber 9RA2 is the Spring Drive movement that best embodies these skills and their passion.

About 9R Spring Drive

Spring Drive, one of the great innovations in modern watch making history, regulates a spring-driven movement with state-of-the-art electronic technology that functions without batteries or other external power source. Its sole power source is a mainspring, which drives a series of gears. A rotor, connected to the end of these gears, generates a small electrical charge that activates an electronic circuit and quartz oscillator. Its accuracy is unprecedented for a watch wound by a mainspring. The development of the 9R Spring Drive movement was possible only because Grand Seiko is one of the few manufacturers with expertise in both mechanical and electronic watches.

The Evolution 9 Style

Grand Seiko SLGA015 Style

In 2020, Grand Seiko introduced a new design philosophy called the Evolution 9 Style. It was based, of course, on the Grand Seiko Style which has always defined the design of all Grand Seiko watches and continues to do so. The Evolution 9 Style preserves the fundamentals of the Grand Seiko Style but adapts them for a new generation by setting new standards of legibility, comfort and beauty.
Ever since its creation in 1960, Grand Seiko has evolved continuously as new technologies, materials and ideas have opened up new design possibilities and the Evolution 9 Style is another step forward on this never-ending road. It was developed to further refine the aesthetics that have been at the heart of Grand Seiko from the start and to renew them for the years to come.

Contrast, depth and Lumibrite

Grand Seiko SLGA015 Dial

The legibility could not be greater, thanks to the high contrast between the dial and hands, the precision of the engineering and the generous coatings of Lumibrite that the hands and the markers carry. Furthermore, each hand has its own distinctive shape, as does the 12 o’clock marker, so that the exact time can be read at a glance, even under water.

Spring Drive 5 Days Caliber 9RA5

Spring Drive Caliber 9RA5

Spring Drive is a unique watch technology. It generates energy like every other traditional mechanical watch but combines this with an electronic regulator to deliver a level of precision that no mechanical watch can match. The development of Spring Drive was possible because Grand Seiko is one of the very few manufacturers with mastery of both electronic and mechanical watchmaking.
In addition to achieving a high accuracy of ±10 seconds/month, this movement is 0.8mm thinner than the previous Caliber 9R65 by adopting the “Offset Magic Lever.” The movement is equipped with a power reserve indicator located on the dial side for safety during diving.

Grand Seiko SLGA015 History

Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).

The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.

Design style

The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:

  1. Double width index at 12 o’clock
  2. Multi-faceted rectangular markers
  3. Highly polished bezel
  4. Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
  5. Half recessed crown
  6. Flat dial
  7. Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
  8. Curved side line
  9. Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
  10. Dress style with simple but beautiful design
  11. Zaratsu polishing
