About Grand Seiko SBGH317
Grand Seiko 2024 Ginza Exclusive 62GS Mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 Limited Edition Heritage Collection
A light purple textured dial inspired by the streets of Ginza in winter
This is a limited edition model that expresses the twilight of dawn that surrounds the streets of Ginza, the birthplace of Seiko. Ginza is a city with a unique culture that evolves while tradition and innovation coexist. Even though Ginza is bustling with people, at dawn the streets are sparse and there is a quiet moment. The light purple dial expresses the unique atmosphere of dawn, when Ginza is enveloped in the dry winter air and the city appears quietly. The movement is equipped with the high-beat movement “Caliber 9S85” that beats 10 vibrations per second, achieving more stable and high precision.
*This product is only available at the 6 stores in the Ginza area.
Limited Edition of 530 pieces.
Grand Seiko SBGH317 Features
A dial that captures the tranquil dawn of Ginza
The dial pattern uses the Ginza grid pattern, which is unique to this model and abstractly represents a row of buildings of various shapes. Based on the grid of Ginza drawn diagonally on a map, the grid is laid out so that the 12 o’clock position overlaps with the north direction. Depending on the angle of light, each grid reflects irregularly and shines, creating shadows on the dial. The source of the design is an angle that looks down on Ginza, where its unique streets intertwine, and makes you feel as if you are jumping into the city.

Grand Seiko SBGH317 History
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
