About Grand Seiko SBGJ255
Grand Seiko Heritage Collection
The 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition Mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 GMT in titanium
This watch celebrates the 55th anniversary of 44GS’s first launch in 1967. The 1967 44GS was the watch that first embodied the design code known as the ‘Grand Seiko Style’ which gave Grand Seiko its distinctive look and which inspires every new creation to this day. Its international recognition was enhanced when the 44GS Hi-Beat 36000 GMT won an award at the 2014 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. This watch shares the same design as the 55th Anniversary Limited Edition but the case and bracelet are in high-intensity titanium, a material that is 30% lighter than steel and highly resistant to both scratches and corrosion.
Limited edition of 1,200 pieces.
Grand Seiko SBGJ255 Features :
A gold colored titanium oscillating weight
The oscillating weight is colored gold in honor of the 55th anniversary of the 44GS. The gold tone is achieved through a process of anodic oxidation in which the metal is subjected to electrolysis so as to generate an oxide film. Titanium oxide film produces color according to the light refraction index, enabling production of different colors by varying the thickness of the oxide film.
High precision and high functionality
Just as with 44GS, this case is designed to exemplify the precision of the hi-beat movement within. In addition, the watch offers a GMT function which allows a second time zone to be shown on the blued-steel hand. The hour can be adjusted without stopping the watch, thus preserving the high accuracy of its timekeeping.

Grand Seiko SBGJ255 History :
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
