About Grand Seiko SBGJ271
Grand Seiko “Yukigesho” Snow Covered Scenery Hi-Beat GMT Elegance Collection
A mechanical GMT showcasing a spectacular dial that interweaves nature and culture
Japan is a place where the natural charms of the seasons are woven into the fabric of everyday life. Taking up this concept, the latest Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT dial expresses the beauty that can be achieved by observing the interplay between nature and culture.
Consider the lacquered floors one would find in a traditional Japanese home or a Buddhist temple and how they become a prism of the natural world around them. Soft white snow accumulating on the branches of the trees can reflect off the dark floors, causing them to shine as white snow itself. And yet the definition of floorboards remains. The inhabited world reflects nature back to us – a fresh snow cover, or yukigesho – and is captured in the dial of the new SBGJ271.
Combined with the calming, stone-like grey of the GMT hand, this model imparts the feeling of a quiet place – a traditional home or a temple – during a Japanese winter.
Grand Seiko SBGJ249 Features
Grand Seiko ‘Yuki Gesho’ – ‘Snow Covered Scenery’ – Hi-Beat GMT The textured dial of this timepiece is inspired by Japan’s winter ‘Yuki Gesho’ – or ‘Snow Covered Scenery’ and the dial color symbolizes the snowfall in winter months. ‘The Nature of Time’ theme features prominently in Grand Seiko watch designs – Japan has a deep affinity with its natural environment and the way its beauty changes with the seasons. Just as nature affects the history and the culture of a region, the many and varied landscapes of Japan are a unique source of inspiration, giving individuality to Grand Seiko timepieces. The watchmakers’ pride in their surroundings is represented from engineering watch movements, to creating dials reflecting the beauty of Japanese nature. This Hi-Beat watch is powered by the in-house developed mechanical Caliber 9S86 movement, with a power reserve of 55 hours, an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day and a GMT hand to ensure easy legibility of two time zones at once. Every Grand Seiko features signature high standards of precision, durability and legibility, handcrafted in Japan by Takumi artisans.

Grand Seiko SBGJ249 History
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
